Chapter 01
The heart of viking power
During the Viking Age, Djursland was a strategic hub. With the fortress of Aros (modern-day Aarhus) as a gateway to the world, local chieftains controlled the trade routes of the Baltic Sea. The deep fjords and sheltered bays provided the perfect launching point for the legendary dragon ships.
Chapter 02
Sacred mounds and graves
The landscape is dotted with over 2,000 registered burial mounds. In Mols Bjerge, every stone breathes history. These monuments are not just graves, but witnesses to a time when the boundary between the world of men and the world of the gods was fluid.
Chapter 03
Medieval fortresses
Following the Viking Age, Djursland remained significant. The ruins of Kalø Castle, built by King Erik Menved in 1313, stand today as an impressive monument to medieval power architecture and resistance against the crown.
